Jay Nunamaker's BORDERS Receives Nomination

Shaping the Future of IT Through Research

A consortium of 14 research institutions headed by the University of Arizona is one of three finalists named by the Governor’s Celebration of Innovation (GCOI) Selection Committee for the 2010 Innovator of the Year Award in the academic category. The award will be presented November 18 in Phoenix.

The National Center for Border Security and Immigration (BORDERS), a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence, aims to provide government agencies and stakeholders with knowledge to meet the ever-changing operational demands of U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders.

“We are honored that our work has been recognized by the Governor’s Celebration of Innovation Selection Committee,” said Regents Professor of Management Information Systems at the Eller College of Management Jay F. Nunamaker, who is also the director and principal investigator of BORDERS.

The BORDERS Center is dedicated to the development of innovative technologies, proficient processes, and effective policies that will help protect our Nation’s borders, foster international trade, and enhance long-term understanding of immigration determinants and dynamics.  The Center’s portfolio includes projects in the areas of detection, networks, fusion, risk, immigration, and governance. As the research lead, the University of Arizona  is responsible for administering and managing this research consortium which consists of 14 premier institutions concentrated on the southern and northern borders. The Governor's Celebration of Innovation was established in 2003 by combining two technology award ceremonies: the High Tech Industry Cluster's 17 year Innovator of the Year awards ceremony and the Arizona Software and Internet Association's 10-year “Celebration of Innovation.” With the addition of the Governor's support, the Governor's Celebration of Innovation has become the premier technology community gathering of its kind in Arizona. The Governor's Celebration of Innovation is presented by the Arizona Technology Council and the Arizona Department of Commerce.

The 2010 Governor’s Celebration of Innovation Awards will be held on November 18, 2010 in the heart of downtown Phoenix at the Phoenix Convention Center, 100 North Third Street, in the South Building Ballroom from 3:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Interested parties can visit www.aztechcouncil.org for more information.
