MIS 587 (Business Intelligence) Master's students were given a challenge from their instructor Dr. Sudha Ram. Make a difference to a local company while learning about web analytics and marketing issues facing companies everyday.
To help meet this challenge Sudha has incorporated a global marketing competition into her MIS 587 class.
The Google Online Marketing Challenge (GOMC) gives students the experience of online marketing and creating online marketing campaigns using Google AdWords & Google+. Over 50,000 students from almost 100 countries have participated in past years competitions.
GOMC help students gain a broad overview of managerial, strategic and technical issues associated with business intelligence and data warehouse design, implementation, and utilization.
Student teams receive US$250 of free online advertising with Google AdWords and then work with local businesses to devise effective online marketing campaigns. Teams have to find a company and engage with them, outline a strategy, run a campaign, assess their results and provide the business with recommendations to further develop their online marketing. Teams submit their reports and are judged by a panel of independent judges.
There are twelve teams of MIS 587 students this year who will be competing on April 13, 2012. Each team has 5-6 members. Teams will be judged by a group of four local judges. Winning teams will be awarded the following - 1st place = $450, 2nd place = $300, 3rd place = $150. We would like to thank MISGA (MIS Graduate Association), Eller College and the MIS Department for their generous contributions to help fund this event.
In addition to the local judging, student teams will also be included in the Google worldwide competition. A Google panel of independent academics from all over the world will select the winning teams based on the success of their campaign and the quality of their competition reports. Global winners are due to be notified in July 2012.
SPECIAL THANK YOU to our local judges for contributing their time and expertise to this event.
