The gap between technology "haves" and "have-not's" has increased for children born of the Millennial Generation (between 1980 and 2000). According to “The Digital Divide: Where We Are Today” (www.edutopia.org) authors Dickard and Schneider indicate that only 31.8% of Hispanic, 39.8% of African American and 59.9% of White families have access to the internet.
At the University we see this as a preparation concern as a lack of technology access disadvantages learners. Today library research and reference materials used for instruction and projects are commonly accessed through technology. In addition to simple access, a lack of exposure to technology can result in poor preparation in common application skills (i.e. Microsoft Office), tools and platforms that integrate technology in today’s educational arena.
The MIS department is committed to educating K-12 students, teachers and parents so they are prepared for a world consumed by Information Technology. Our early outreach programs are designed to teach technology skills as well as career and life skills that all students will need to be successful.
