March 25, 2009

Feeding the masses could be more ecologically and economically feasible in the future by using Verdant Earth Technologies new “farm-in-a-box” system.

Verdant’s system is a controlled-environment high-yield agriculture process that will allow crops to be grown anywhere, with no soil and little water, in containers that provide an optimal growing environment for a variety of foods. The system can produce up to 10 times more food per square foot than conventional farming methods.

Verdent’s system is being developed by University of Arizona students Josh Hottenstein (Management Information Systems, masters student) and Myles Lewis (Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, masters student) as an interdisciplinary student project.

Josh and Myles showcased Verdent’s system on March 24, 2009 at the University of Arizona’s Innovation Day. Innovation Day provides investors the opportunity to preview projects developed by students in The University of Arizona’s McGuire Entrepreneurship Program located in the Eller College of Management. In addition, Verdant Earth Technologies won the Best Trade show award.

The future looks bright for not only Josh and Myles - but also for our environment.
